What's the Project About?

We're inviting talented vocalists to be part of an exciting and innovative project!

We're running a research project on behalf of Smule, a leading karaoke app, collecting vocal recordings to help train advanced machine learning models of the human singing voice. The usage will be for internal research purposes only.

This project prioritises natural, human variation over mechanical precision, aiming to capture the authentic diversity of real-world singing. We are not replacing the human voice, but developing features to aid in audio upscaling.

Requirements

• Must be 18 or over
• Must be a professional singer/vocalist with experience in vocal variations
• Must be located in or close to Manchester, UK, as the recordings will take place on location
  • Travel costs will not be covered, but you are welcome to travel to the studio if you wish
• Must be available for an estimated 2.5-hour studio session at some point Monday-Friday, 9 am - 7 pm.

Project Details

If you're selected for this project, you'll be recording a specific song, "The Rainbow Passage," at a studio in Manchester, UK. This song is broken down into 22 short sections, and you'll perform it in 12 different stylistic variations. The entire piece is about 7 minutes long, with approximately 5 minutes of actual singing.

The Recording Process

We estimate that your studio time will be around 2.5 hours to complete all the necessary recordings.
